Het liep niet lekker, de mensen bleven vasthouden aan de luxe bij Fop Smit. In 1878 gingen de beide rederijen met elkaar in gesprek met het eindresultaat dat Fop Smit deze drie schepen overnam. Ook ene heer Quakernaat dacht kans te maken wat omzet weg te nemen bij Fop Smit met zijn twee boten, maar ook hij moest het af laten weten. Uiteindelijk, in 1885 was het de trein naar Elst die het eerste kleine deukje in het gezag van Fop Smit wist te drukken alhoewel het nog nauwelijks zichtbaar was. Het was vooral de opkomst van de auto en autobus die na een kleine honderd jaar de heerschappij van Fop Smit in de jaren dertig een beentje lichte.
