Als onderdeel van de inrichting tot park, werden een 250-tal fruitbomen gerooid, o.a. uit angst dat de vruchten een verkeerd effect zouden hebben op bezoekende jeugd. Van der Linden heeft protest tegen deze rooiing aangetekend. Hij heeft zelfs een groot aantal van de bomen opgekocht op een openbare veiling om ze de dag erna weer aan de gemeente aan te bieden, maar het mocht niet baten. De bomen werden gerooid. Als laatste protest plaatste hij enkele van de door hem gekochte bomen ondersteboven in de tuin van zijn moeder, het huidige Bos van Staring, waar hij tevens de villa Soekasari heeft gebouwd.
