Van deze 15e eeuwse kerk werd in 1531 de 80m hoge toren voltooid. In 1897 brandt de toren compleet af t.g.v. een blikseminslag, maar de kerk loopt dan weinig schade op. Architect P.J. Cuypers leidt de restauratie van de toren, die een neo-gotisch uiterlijk ( Nederrijns Laat- Gotiek) krijgt. De Utrechtse Domtoren heeft vermoedelijk als model gefunctioneerd. ( Halverwege de toren in het benedendeel bevindt zich een gevangenis, die oorspronkelijk is aangelegd als retraite-cel voor de bagijnen van het Agnietenklooster). De schade aan de kerk en de toren in de meidagen 1940 was gering. Maar d.d. 24 april 1945 brachten drie voltreffers op de toren van de Engelse luchtmacht een enorme schade aan zowel aan de toren als aan de kerk en omgeving. De toren stond tot ca. 1975 in de steigers. Als je vanaf Kesteren over de brug over de Nederrijn rijdt zie van ver al deze markante toren.
