In 1901 besloot het stadsbestuur van Dordrecht om het drassige gorzengebied aan de overzijde van het Wantij, dat bekend stond als ‘De Staart’, op te hogen en geschikt te maken voor industriële bedrijvigheid. De eerste onderneming die er zich in 1909 vestigde was de NV Scheepswerf Dordrecht van ingenieur Jan Jacob Willem Bijvoet, die ervaring had opgedaan op de werf van Jan Smit & Zn. te Alblasserdam. Voor huisvesting in de nabijheid van hun werk richtte het bedrijf een eigen bouwmaatschappij op, het ‘Noorderkwartier’ geheten, die vele tientallen arbeiderswoningen op de Staart liet bouwen. De werf raakte in grote financiële problemen en was in 1923 zelfs genoodzaakt de poorten tijdelijk te sluiten. Bij de ‘buurman’ van de scheepswerf daarentegen was het een drukte van belang. NV Machinefabriek ‘De Biesbosch’, opgericht in 1917 door de Dordtenaren Kooyman en Hulsman. Eind jaren ’20 is NV scheepswerf Dordrecht opgegaan in Scheepswerf ‘De Biesbosch’.
