nu is er het skatepark
In Park Merwesteijn zijn in 1942 (met inzet van Nederlandse aannemers en Joodse gevangenen uit subkamp Moerdijk van Kamp Vught) vijf bunkers gebouwd. Zij dienden van 1942 tot september 1944 voor het onderbrengen van de generale staf van de 719e Infanterie Division. Dit legeronderdeel was belast met de bouw en bemanning van de Atlantikwal in de sector tussen Goeree-Overflakkkee en Den Haag. De bunkers dienden alleen als onderkomen tijdens krijgshandelingen, normaal verbleef de operationele staf in barakken die naast de bunkers werden opgericht, in School Muhring, de HBS en gevorderde villa's aan de Vrieseweg en De Singel. Er zijn 4 verschillende type bunkers in het park gebouwd, allen in de zwaarste (STandige) uitvoering van 3 a 4 meter dik beton: Twee stuks R 608: gefechtstand voor de Generale staf van de divisie en Gefechtstand voor het 723e Infanterie Regiment; R 610: Gefechtstand voor het 743e Grenadier Regiment; R 622: Doppelgruppen Unterstand (Personeelsonderkomen R 618: Nachrichtenstand (telecommunicatiecentrum) voor de 719e Nachrichten Abteilung. Tevens zijn in het park en achter School Muhring betonnen bergplaatsen en schuilkelders gebouwd. De barakken en het manschappencasino in de villa zijn bij het bombardement op het (toen al door de 719E ID. verlaten) hoofdkwartier in september 1944 verwoest dan wel zwaar beschadigd. In 1946 zijn in het kader van een tewerkstellingsproject van werklozen de bunkers en overige werken in het park handmatig gesloopt en geruimd. De foto geeft een beeld van deze werkzaamheden. Het vrijgekomen puin is grotendeels gebruikt voor de fundering van de paden in het Weizigtpark. Plattegronden van de bunkers en werken hangen in Museum 1940-1945 aan de Nieuwe Haven.
