Aan de buitenzijde werden zware rubberen matten aangebracht die waren opgehangen aan stangen die in de schoorstenen bevestigd werden. Nadat de springladingen waren aangebracht werden ze "aangestampt" met zand. Het blijft onvoorstelbaar dat de ladingen zo'n reusachtige kracht ontwikkelen want het beton van schoorstenen was vrij dik van onderen. Ook waren de 13 m hoge onderkanten van de pijpen niet rond maar enigszins een vierkant en dat maakte het moeilijk om ze onder de juiste hoek te laten vallen. En dat gebeurde dan ook niet; de top van één pijp kwam op de spoorrails en de weg terecht !
