Daarna werd aardgas de brandstof en was kolenstook verleden tijd. De CM 1 en 2 werden in 1977-79 stapsgewijs uit bedrijf genomen. In maart 1981 werd begonnen met het verwijderen van asbest van ketels, turbines en vele stoomleidingen. In november van dat jaar werd begonnen met de sloop van de gebouwen. De schoorstenen werden op 24 nov 1984 opgeblazen. De in de zestiger jaren gebouwde eenheden CM 3 en 4 werden in 1998-2000 geamoveerd en daarmee was de eens zo statige stroomfabriek geheel uit het stadsbeeld verdwenen.
