Vanwege het verval door eb en vloed, maar ook door de vaak steile en ondiepe aanlanding kan een pontontrein niet altijd geheel alleen uit pontons bestaan, de eersten en laatsten zouden dan droogvallen. Een rijdende trein bestond uit 12 ponton- en schraagwagens, dus 10 met een ponton en 2 met een schraag, een transportwagen, raderwagen en compagnieskar, plus nog een reservetrein bestaande uit 6 pontons met wagens. Het opstellen van een schraag was het meest tijdrovendste klusje van het geheel, vooral wanneer de ondergrond onstabiel was, waar dan ook weer voorzieningen voor getroffen moesten worden. De pontons zelf waren van geklonken verzinkt plaatstaal vervaardigd. Middels ribben aan elkaar verbonden (gesjord) waarover de brugplanken haaks werden aangebracht. E.e.a. ontleend aan een schrijven van J. Eysten, 1ste Luitenant der Artillerie, uit het Elsevier's geïllustreerd maandschrift waarvan jaargang mij onbekend.
