De centrale werd vanaf het begin (1952-1954) tot ca. 1970 op kolen gestookt en toen was de fabriek op haar mooist. Na 1970 werd het aardgas en kolenpark verloor z'n functie. De op kolen gestookte centrale bestond uit vier eenheden van elk 50 megawatt. In 1982 werden de gebouwen van de CM1 en 2 gesloopt en de schoorstenen werden op 24 nov 1984 opgeblazen. Toen stond alleen de CM3 en 4 er nog en deze werden in 1998-2000 geamoveerd.
Maar het is dus een deel van de Merwedecentrale aan de Kerkeplaat in oostelijke richting, kijkend naar een gebouw welke is opgenomen in het traject van de kolen, van buitenopslag naar stookplaat. Ondanks dat de energiebron werd gewijzigd naar olie, bleef dit gebouw kennelijk toch nog steeds functioneel. Zie 552_303798.
