De eerste paal werd in juli 1949 geslagen en de CM 1 kwam in 1952 in bedrijf. Nog tijdens de bouw werd besloten tot de bouw van CM 2, eveneens twee maal 50 megawatt. In 1954 kwam deze in bedrijf en toen had de centrale, met vier schoorstenen, een vermogen van 200 megawatt. In de jaren zestig zouden er nog twee eenheden bijkomen en kwam het totale vermogen van de stroomfabriek uit op 500 megawatt. Sinds 2000 is de centrale uit het stadsbeeld verdwenen; de CM 1 en 2 werden reeds in 1982 afgebroken. Verder de noodwoningen, "Witte huisjes", te zien. De foto zal uit ca. 1950/51 zijn.
