In 1700 is dit pand gebouwd in opdracht van Huybert Borret uit Luik als opslag voor ijzer en spijkers, vandaar de naam Spijkervat en het tonnetje boven de hoofdtoegang. In 1832 is het pand in bezit gekomen van Otto Boudewijn ’t Hooft die in meekrap, een uit plantenwortel verkregen rode verfstof, handelde. Hij schilderde het tonnetje rood en noemde het pand Meevat. ( Mee- afgeleid van de Meekrap, vat voor de meekrap) Tussen 1906-1925 was er inderdaad de 1e Hollandse paraplufabriek van Martinot. Zie o.a. beschrijving op ANWB-bordje op de gevel.
