Reederij Gebroeders Blussé zat in Oud-Alblas en had al vanaf 1820 regelmatig schepen besteld bij scheepswerf Cornelis Gips en Zn. in Dordrecht. In 1853 werd een model van een Amerikaanse clipper, gebouwd in New Jersey, naar Dordrecht gehaald. Op basis daarvan werd door Blussé in 1855 het houten clipperfregat KOSMOPOLIET I bij Gips besteld. Het schip was ca 800 ton groot en bestemd voor de vaart op Java. Zo’n reis duurde 3 maanden. Het schip werd ook gebruikt voor troepentransport, er kon een detachement militairen (125 man) meevaren, dat betrof Nederlandse rekruten die dan in Nederlands-Indië werden gestationeerd. In 1865 volgden de KOSMOPOLIET II (1077 ton) en in 1971 de KOSMOPOLIET III (1548 ton) voor dezelfde eigenaar.
