Zie ook: "Simon van Brakel en zijn nazaten", Artikel uit tijdschrift 1990/3 van de historische Vereniging Oud-Dordrecht In het gesprek, dat de redactie voerde met de heer Wouters, viel de naam Simon van Brakel en Zoon, een groothandel in koffie en tabak, waarmee de heer Linders (werkgever van de heer Wouters) zaken deed. Nu kent iedere oudere Dordtenaar nog wel de firma Simon van Brakel en Zoon, die gevestigd was aan de Voorstraat 1 bij de Melkpoort, of - wanneer u in het bezit bent van de serie "Ach Lieve Tijd" herinnert u zich ongetwijfeld de gezellige achterpagina van deel 5: "De Dordtenaren en hun Handel". Op de plaats waar deze gerenommeerde zaak stond zijn nu nieuwe woningen verrezen. Alleen achter het pand Voorstraat 11 bevindt zich nog de zolder waar men vroeger de tabak droogde en kerfde en waar de pinda's werden gebrand. Bij het horen van die naam kwam bij mij de gedachte op eens te gaan praten met de heer P.J. van Brakel, die ik nog van vroeger kende, omdat we dezelfde school bezochten. Hij was de laatste directeur van deze groothandel, die in 1970 als zelfstandig bedrijf ophield te bestaan. Tijdens dit onderhoud toonde hij mij een familiekroniek van het geslacht Van Brakel. De gegevens hiervoor werden verzameld en in november 1971 gepubliceerd door de heer J.P. van Brakel uit Katwijk aan Zee.
