De toren van Grietgen van Driel ,ook genaamd de Watersteintoren, zie ook 552_101214. De kademuur is de Nieuwe Haven. De toren stond tussen de Knolhaven en de Varkenmarkt. Zij werd omstreeks 1560 gesloopt en daarna met een andere functie weer opgebouwd. In 1591 verkocht Margaretha Wenssen, weduwe van Cornelis van Driel Claesz., alias Grietgen van Driel, de toren. In 1617 werd zij eigendom van de stad en ingericht tot stadswerkhuis ("timmerhuijs'). In 1645 wordt gesproken van het voormalig stadswerkhuis. (Van der stede muere. Jaarboek 2000 van de vereniging Oud-Dordrecht [Dordrecht 2001], p. 83-84) "In 1553 werd [de toren] in het kohier van de 10e penning vermeld: 'Den toren van Cornelis Claessoen van Driel staende opten nijeu haven ande waterzij/ onder een kelder en(de) bove(n) een [korenzolder].' De toren lag direct aan het water van de Nieuwe Haven, zodat het voor de hand ligt dat de korenhandelaar Cornelis Claesz. van Driel de toren gebruikt heeft als graanpakhuis. Overigens werd de toren door de taxateurs van de belastingen niet zeer hoog ingeschat: de aanslag vanwege de 10e penning bedroeg in 1553 slechts 7 Rijnsgld. en in 1555 was het haardstedegeld voor 'Cornelis Claesz. thoren' slechts 1 Car. gld. In 1561 behoefde wegens 'den thoorne toebehooren(de) Cornelis Claesz. van Driel weduw(e) dewelcke inde Jare LXJ leech gestaen heeft' zelfs helemaal niets betaald te worden, al was wel 3 [pond] verschuldigd voor 'een kelder staende onder den selfden thoern dewelcke in huyre heeft Hans Slootgens'. Uit hetzelfde kohier van 1561 blijkt, dat er naast de toren nog een scheepstimmerwerf gelegen heeft, vermoedelijk aan de westzijde. ... Het gebied Tolbrugstraat-Waterzijde is archeologisch onderzocht in de periode 1968-1971. Bij deze opgravingen werden de zeer zware en diepe funderingen van de Watersteintoren blootgelegd." (Ir. C.
